Passive House Engineering for Ireland and UK

• The Passivhaus Standard
is a construction standard
developed by the Passiv Haus Institut
in Germany (http://www.passiv.de).
The standard can be met using a variety of design strategies,
construction methods
and technologies and is applicable to any
building type.
The first passive house was built in Darmstadt (Germany) in
1991 by
Dr Wolfgang Feist - the founder of the
renowned
Passiv Haus Institut.
Today, with over 12,000 passive
houses built since then the
concept
has become a resounding
market success across Europe.
• The EU
Parliament has proposed a binding requirement that all new buildings
needing to be heated or cooled be constructed to a
‘
passive house’ or equivalent standard from 2011
onwards (reference European Parliament resolution of 31 January 2008
on an
Action Plan for Energy Efficiency: A6- 0003/2008).As the energy efficiency of
new-buildings steadily improves, there may well be
increasing pressure to reduce the energy consumption of older
buildings in order that they can compete for buyer’s attention on the
open market.
• Today
in Ireland, the passive house concept is capturing the imagination
of the Irish
public with a few visionary entrepreneurs
taking the lead in making it happen. German Passive Houses in
conjunction with Dip.Eng. Jan Balkowski are at the
forefront of a
movement
that has brought about a fundamental rethink in the
way we design, construct and operate buildings.
